What it is
Drum journeywork is a meditative practice that uses rhythmic drumming to shift consciousness and enter non-ordinary reality for healing, insight, and connection.
Origins & Traditions
The drum is one of humanity’s oldest instruments, used by Indigenous cultures across the world for ceremony, storytelling, and spiritual travel. Its steady rhythm is often described as the heartbeat of Mother Earth.
How it works
A steady drumbeat, usually around 4–7 beats per second, helps guide the brain into a theta state—deeply relaxed yet aware—making it easier to receive visions, guidance, and healing. Participants may journey to meet guides, explore symbolic landscapes, or retrieve lost parts of the self.
Benefits
- Accesses deeper states of awareness
- Supports emotional and spiritual healing
- Strengthens intuition and inner guidance
- Facilitates connection with spirit allies and archetypes
When to use it
During ceremony, when seeking insight, or as part of personal healing work.
What to expect
Journeys are typically done lying down with eyes closed, focusing on breath and sound. Experiences can be vivid or subtle, with imagery, sensations, or feelings that carry personal meaning.
A note on respect & intention
Always journey with a clear intention and in a safe, grounded space. Approach the drum and the realms it opens with reverence.
